Poll: Half of Americans Uncertain About Trump Presidency Despite Economic Growth

Slightly more than half of Americans surveyed said they are uncertain or worried about the upcoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump despite growing optimism over the US economy, according to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A quarter of Americans indicated they were uncertain and 29 percent pessimistic and worried about how Trump will perform during his presidency, the poll revealed.

"Usually elections settle arguments and the nation comes together, at least in the short term," Hart Research Associates’ Democratic pollster Fred Yang said in an NBC report explaining the poll. "Today, hard feelings persist on both sides of the partisan divide. It's as if the 2016 campaign has never ended."

Some 45 percent said they were optimistic or hopeful about the upcoming Trump presidency, the poll noted.

A combined 66 percent were either optimistic or hopeful about President Barack Obama in January 2009, according to the same poll, while 59 percent were optimistic or hopeful about President George W. Bush in January 2001, the report explained.

While the public is largely apprehensive about the president-elect, Americans do say that they are more optimistic that the US economy will improve in the next year, the report added.

A separate poll by the Gallup organization, also on Tuesday, revealed confidence in the future of the US economy had reached a nine-year high.
