WASHINGTON (Sputnik) —Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was killed by a gunman at an art gallery exhibition opening in Ankara earlier on Monday. Three other people were also injured in the attack.
Kerry described the murder as an assault on the right of all diplomats to safely and securely advance and represent their nations worldwide.
"We stand ready to offer assistance to Russia and Turkey as they investigate this despicable attack, which was also an assault on the right of all diplomats to safely and securely advance and represent their nations around the world," Kerry stated.
The US Department of Defense condemned the killing, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said at a briefing.
"We are aware of the situation in Turkey and the shooting of the Russian ambassador. We condemn this act of violence," Cook told reporters.
