WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On December 7, President-elect Donald Trump officially announced that Mattis, who served as US commander in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2010-2013, was his pick for the defense secretary job.
"In our system they [defense secretaries] need to get confirmed. I expect he will be," Carter stated at a joint press conference with the UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon in London.
Mattis has also served as US Central Command chief and a NATO commander.
