US Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has announced the name of the service’s newest ballistic-missile submarine and a Marine Corps high-speed landing craft, according to a release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The sub will be called USS Columbia and the landing craft will be called the Puerto Rico, according to the release.

"Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus formally announced the first ship of the new fleet ballistic missile submarines…will be named USS Columbia (SSBN 826) in honor of the District of Columbia,” Wednesday’s release stated. “The Marine Expeditionary Fast Transport…was named the Puerto Rico (T-EPF 11)."

The Puerto Rico is an all-aluminum, commercial-based catamaran designed for “high-speed intra-theater surface lift” and serves in a variety of military roles, including support of overseas contingency operations, conducting humanitarian-aid and disaster-relief missions, and supporting special-operations forces, the release explained.
