US Senator and 2016 Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders called US President-elect Donald Trump's nominee Rex Tillerson for US secretary of state "a very troubling message to the international community."

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Rex Tillerson, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for US secretary of state, will cause concern throughout the world, US Senator and 2016 Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Mr. Trump's nomination of Rex Tillerson for secretary of state is sending a very troubling message to the international community," Sanders stated.

McConnell Gives Strong Support for Tillerson as Next Secretary of State

Sanders pointed out that Tillerson is a friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and noted Tillerson's current job as the Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil is problematic.

"Mr. Trump is making it abundantly clear that the short-term profits of the fossil fuel industry are more important than climate change and the future of the planet," Sanders added.

Sanders also urged the US Senate to oppose Tillerson's nomination.
