WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The cost of the fifth-generation F-35 stealth jets is excessively high, US President-elect Donald Trump stated on Monday.
"The F-35 program and cost is out of control. Billions of dollars can and will be saved on military (and other) purchases after January 20th," Trump stated in a Twitter message.
After the president-elect’s statement, shares of the F-35 contractor Lockheed Martin dropped sharply, according to media reports.
The F-35 project is the most ambitious and expensive weapon system in the history of the US Defense Department, with a cost of some $1.5 trillion.
