US House of Representatives majority leader Kevin McCarthy told reporters he does not support President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to impose a 35 percent tariff on products and services of companies who leave the United States because such a move may start a trade war.

Trump Vows to End ‘Massive’ Trade Deals, Impose Punitive Taxes, Tariffs
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to media reports, other free market-oriented Republicans are also opposed to the idea of imposing a 35 percent tariff as it could hurt US consumers.

"I don’t want to get into some type of trade war," McCarthy said on Monday. "I think there are other ways to achieve what the president-elect is talking about."

McCarthy noted the tax reform proposals that Republicans in the House of Representatives have been working on can achieve the same goal of preventing companies from leaving the United States.
