WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Clinton is leading with 65,152,112 votes against Trump’s 62,625,928 votes, data released by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report on Thursday showed.

The popular vote data shows Clinton’s lead is approaching 1.9 percent, which is consistent with the results of polls that predicted the former secretary of state would win the general election.

Trump won the US presidential election on November 8 by gaining an electoral vote lead over Clinton.

In November, Trump claimed that the results of the popular vote in the US election would have been different if millions of "illegal" votes had been discounted.

Trump's inauguration will be held on January 20, 2017.
