US Congress should not pass the 21st Century Cures Act because it will only enrichen pharmaceutical companies while cutting Medicare and Medicaid by some $1 billion, US Senator Bernie Sanders said in a press release on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The 21st Century Cures Act being finalized by Congress is one of the most-lobbied healthcare bills in recent history and, if passed, would keep generics off the market longer for drugs used to treat rare diseases, according to NBC News.

"The greed of the pharmaceutical industry has no limit, and this bill includes numerous corporate giveaways that will make drug companies even richer," Sanders stated.

The bill provides absolutely no relief to Americans who are already paying the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs, Sanders claimed.

The 21st Century Cures Act also seeks to accelerate biomedical research through innovative practices, data-sharing and development of new drugs for rare diseases, proponents of the bill claim.

The legislation was approved by the US House of Representatives in 2015.
