Senator Bernie Sanders criticized the Electoral College as being unfair to the majority of US states.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US Senator Bernie Sanders, who ran against Hillary Clinton for Democratic presidential nomination, said Sunday the existing system of electoral college was unfair to the majority of US states and needed to be reexamined.

"Campaigns are basically about 16-17 states, battleground states… I think that's unfair to the other 30-plus states that also would like to be participating in the political process," he told CNN.

Sanders explained that the majority of states were considered as Democratic or Republican-leaning and received little attention from presidential contenders on campaign trail.

"The needs and the people of those states are ignored," he said.

He described as "a little bit weird" that Clinton was beaten to US presidency despite winning almost 2 million more votes than Republican nominee Donald Trump in the popular vote. She lost the Electoral College tally by over 70 votes.
