WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Thursday, a car bomb explosion was staged by Daesh at a checkpoint north of the Egyptian Sinai peninsula. Eight servicemen and three terrorists were killed in the incident.
"The United States condemns the terrorist attack claimed by Daesh [Islamic State] that killed several soldiers at a security checkpoint in North Sinai Governorate in Egypt," the release stated on Friday.
Kirby stated that Washington has expressed solidarity with the people of Egypt as they confront violent extremism.
"The United States strongly supports Egypt’s security, and together we will continue to work together to defeat this threat," he added.
Egypt has been conducting anti-terrorist operations in the North Sinai region during the past two years amid the rise of the number of Islamists, particularly among the Sinai Province militant group.
