WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to the release, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reportedly issued an immigration detainer for Roberto Carlos Flores Sibrian, which seeks cooperation with local authorities to prevent Sibrian from being released back into the public.
Sibrian allegedly struck the vehicle of a woman with his car in the US state of Virginia, dragged her into a ditch and raped her for two hours, the release noted.
If so, the DHS would have been able to work with Virginia state and local law enforcement to take custody of the individual in question for posing danger to public safety, according to the release.
The judiciary committees also asked Johnson what procedures US federal officials need to take if local law enforcement refuse to honor a federal immigration detainer request, the release stated.
According to a DHS report, ICE released 19,723 illegal immigrants with a criminal background in fiscal year 2015. More than 900 of those released had been convicted of sex crimes and 208 convicted of murder.
