WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Initial opinions from 100 soldiers who wore the uniforms for seven-days during training were favorable, the release explained. Soldiers liked the fabric because it was lightweight and breathable.
"The goal is to create a flame-resistant combat uniform made wholly from domestic materials," Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center textile technologist Carole Winterhalter said in the release on Wednesday.
The press release cited employment benefits for the nation’s 80,000 wool growers. US law requires that military uniforms be made in the United States.
The Department of Defense spends about $2 billion annually on uniforms and is under pressure from the US Congress to cut uniform costs.
