LIMA (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama admitted Sunday the United States sometimes failed to uphold human rights and other international norms, both at home and in its actions abroad, including in Latin America.

"There have been times when we ourselves have not observed some of these norms as well as we should and have been accused of hypocrisy here in the Latin America. There have been times when these countries felt disrespected," Obama told reporters.

"There were times we haven't observed these values in our own country and have fallen short of our ideals but that basic structure is the reason why this world is much more safe and secure," he said on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Lima, Peru.
