WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On issues where Senate Democrats disagree with President-elect Donald Trump, they will not be afraid to put up a tough fight, US Senator Chuck Schumer said to reporters on Wednesday after his election as the new Senate minority leader.
"Where we can work together, we will, but I’ve also said to the President-elect on issues where we disagree, you can expect a strong and tough fight… and that’s how the relationship’s going to be," Schumer stated.
The New York senator noted that Democrats are ready to work with Republicans in the Senate but would “go toe-to-toe with Trump when values or progress we made is under assault.”
On Wednesday, Schumer was elected as Senate minority leader. He will replace Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, who is retiring.
