WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Chief Charlie Beck said he would not help implement US President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to tighten up federal immigration policies and deport millions undocumented immigrants, US media reported.
Beck said the LAPD would not initiate operations solely based on a person’s immigration status and would not work along the US Department of Homeland Security in deportation efforts, the Los Angeles Times said on Monday.
Throughout the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump pledged to stop the flow of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and to build a wall on the US-Mexico border. He also promised to deport millions of illegal immigrants, particularly those that have committed crimes.
On Monday, outgoing President Barack Obama said in a press conference that he would urge Trump not to deport illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States by their parents as young children.
