NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The US public should oppose President-elect Donald Trump's actions if they espouse hate and division in order to take away his power, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in an interview.

"We need to hold Trump accountable for anything he does that encourages hate and division," de Blasio told the radio show Hot 97 on Monday. "The more extreme he is, the more people fight back, the more it takes away his power."

De Blasio referenced massive public outcry during president Barack Obama's presidency that stalled many controversial political mandates put forward by the government as a sign of power that regular citizens hold if they decide to voice opposition.

The targeting women and minority groups, hate speech, bias toward the wealthy and the dismissal of "basic moral values" were among the issues that require active public pushback, de Blasio added.
