The team of US President-elect Donald Trump is considering the candidacy of outgoing Senator Kelly Ayotte for the position of the secretary defense for his new cabinet, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to The Washington Post newspaper citing sources, Ayotte is regarded as knowledgeable and competent.

Other candidates for the post include retired Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Kellogg, former Defense Intelligence Agency director Gen. Mike Flynn and Senator Jeff Sessions.

Trump secured an unexpected victory in the presidential election on Tuesday with 290 electoral votes against his rival Hillary Clinton's 232. His inauguration will be held on January 20, 2017.

Earlier this week, media reports emerged claiming that advisers to Trump have suggested the possibility that JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon could serve as treasury secretary in the new administration.
