US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is holding on to a very narrow lead over Republican candidate Donald Trump in the battleground US states of Florida and North Carolina, a new Quinnipiac University poll revealed on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In Florida, Clinton leads Trump 46 to 45 percent, which is within the poll's 3.3 margin of error.

"Likely voter results in Florida and North Carolina, two states seen as critical to the final outcome, are too close to call," a press release accompanying the poll stated.

In North Carolina, Clinton is two points ahead of Trump, 47 to 45 percent, which is also within the margin of error.

The US presidential election will take place on Tuesday.
