The US Department of Defense is working with the Jordanian government to clarify circumstances of a shooting incident that left three American servicemen dead, the department’s spokesperson Peter Cook said in a statement on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Three US military service members were killed in a shooting at a military base in southern Jordan earlier in the day.

"We are saddened to report that three US service members were killed today in a shooting incident at a Jordanian military base," Cook stated. "We are working closely with the government of Jordan to determine exactly what happened."

According to reports, US military trainers were fired on when their vehicle failed to stop at the base’s gate.

The Jordanian Armed Forces said it was investigating a shootout at the gate of the King Feisal Airbase near the town of Manna. One Jordanian officer was also wounded, apparently shot in the neck by the US service members.

A Department of Defense spokesman told Sputnik that the department was investigating the reports.
