WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "Scott Michael Greene has been arrested and charged with two counts of Murder — 1st Degree," Thursday’s statement read. "The investigation has produced probable cause to support these charges."

Greene is accused of shooting to death Sgt. Anthony Beminio of the Des Moines police and officer Justin Martin of the nearby Urbandale department in separate attacks on their patrol cars Wednesday morning.

The Iowa native turned himself in shortly after the shootings and was hospitalized with a pre-existing medical condition, officials said.

Investigators later found Greene's abandoned car, and a police dog uncovered a rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, in nearby woods.

US President Barack Obama on Wednesday praised the officers for their service and condemned their deaths as “shameful acts of violence.”

Beminio was an 11-year veteran of the Des Moines police, while Martin joined the Urbandale police in 2015.
