Supporters of US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump are far less likely to consider a critical press important for American democracy than voters who support Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In addition, Trump backers appear to share their candidate’s doubts that the upcoming presidential election will be fair, according to a press release explaining the poll.

“Only about half of Trump supporters (49 percent) view this [press freedom] as very important, compared with 72 percent of Clinton supporters,” the poll revealed on Thursday.

Just 43 percent of Trump voters have a great deal or fair amount of confidence the presidential election will be “open and fair,” compared with more than twice as many Clinton supporters (88 percent), according to the poll.

In another finding, the poll indicated the voters believe that neither Trump nor Clinton would do a good job leading the nation.

“Concerns over Clinton’s honesty persist, and just 35 percent say that, if elected, she would make a good or great president,” the press release explained. Even fewer, 27 percent, have confidence that Trump would make a good or great president.

The level of pessimism directed at both candidates has changed little over the course of the campaign, according to PEW.
