NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Nine members of the committee voted in favor of the resolution on Tuesday, the minutes said. It was unclear how two other members of the panel who were present voted.
"Res. No. 1230 would recognize that Muslims are a part of our society and, inspired by their faith and dedication to American ideals, give back every day as military personnel, police officers, doctors, nurses, caregivers, teachers, students and in many other roles contributing to the success of the United States and the City of New York," according to a committee report on Tuesday.
The resolution, put forward by Democrat Daneek Miller, comes in response to a number of attacks on mosques and Muslims in the United States, the report stated.
"The attacks on the Muslim community this year are greater than even that of the years after 9/11," Miller said according to a report by CBS New York.
A New York woman faces hate crime charges for allegedly attacking two Muslim women last month, attempting to rip away their headscarves, as they pushed children in strollers.
The attack follows murder charges against the alleged killer of an imam and a colleague in the New York City borough of Queens in August, according to CNN.
