Some 21 US sailors were convicted by courts martial in September, primarily on sex related or drug abuse charges, the US Navy announced in a press release on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON, October 11 (Sputnik) — Of 21 trials in which the defendants either pled guilty or were found guilty, eight were convicted of sex-related charges such as possession of child pornography, sexual assault or sex acts with a minor, according to the release.

"The following reports the results of Special and General Courts-Martial tried and completed within the United States Navy in September 2016."

Five were guilty on charges related to possession or use of controlled substances, and the remainder on an assortment of charges such as manslaughter, theft and simple assault, the release noted.
