NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Svetlana Zakharova Travis was arrested and charged with money extortion upon her return to the United States, and is scheduled to appear in Manhattan Criminal Court later in the day, CBS New York reported on Tuesday.
Police were called to the Plaza hotel in Manhattan last February, when Zakharova accused Spitzer of allegedly choking her almost to death — Spitzer denied all accusations and no charges were ever filed, according to New York Police Department.
Zakharova left the country for Russia the day after the incident.
Spitzer left New York governor's post in 2008 amid a scandal that exposed him hiring prostitutes.
