On Wednesday, the US Senate is expected to override a presidential veto signed by Obama for the first time in his administration; the bill in question would allow the families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia. Iranian political analyst Mosiba Na'imi spoke to Sputnik about this decision.

Obama Vetoes Bill That Would Allow 9/11 Victims' Families to Sue Saudi Arabia
Back in May, while the Senate was deliberating the document, Obama vowed to block it. Nevertheless, the bill was adopted unanimously. The drafts’ author, Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, pointed out that approval of the document will allow families of the victims to achieve justice, to at least some extent.

Mosiba Na'imi, who is General Director of the Iranian Arabic-language newspaper Al-Wafag, said in an interview with Sputnik Persian that this bill actually reflects the indifference of the American authorities towards their citizens and may result in a search for new culprits in the September 11 attacks.

“The Americans themselves know very well that the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 were done by Saudi Arabia. The people behind this terrorist act are known, so the fact that the Americans relented and offered some concessions regarding this issue, show how the United States is indifferent to its own nationals,” Na’imi said.

He further said that it is important to know that the tragic events of September 11 had nothing to do with Iran.

“Still, claims against Iran, which is now likely to fall with a bang over our supposed involvement in this terrorist act, are unfounded.”

The expert further said that there is no Iranian connection with these attacks. However, the US under various pretexts always launches false accusations against Iran.

“However, in fact these charges will always remain just words; the Americans have no legislative and legal power to harm Iran,” Na’imi said.

The expert further said that “all these tricks of the United States can be understood as the absence of a clear and fair policy of the US. The authorities of this country are even ready to make deals that ignore the rights of its citizens. The fact only worsens the image of politics in this country.”

Nai’mi also mentioned the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia. “The US exerts heavy pressure on the Saudi authorities because of oil dollars, financial benefits, political missions and the normalization of relations and rapprochement with Israel.”

According to the analyst, all of these reasons may be factors which motivated the US president’s move to nullify the investigation into Riyadh. “The American ‘Sword of Damocles’ will always hang over the head of government of Saudi Arabia,” the expert concluded.
