According to the US FBI director, there is no indication that Ahmad Rahami, suspected in a series of bombings in the New York City area, is part of a terror cell.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — There is no indication that Ahmad Rahami, suspected in a series of bombings in the New York City area, is part of a terror cell, US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey testified to the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday.

"That investigation is open,” Comey said. “We see, so far, no indication of a larger cell or the threat of related attacks.”

On September 20, federal prosecutors filed terrorism and weapons charges against Rahami in connection with three bombings in New York City and New Jersey over the previous weekend.

One bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey and another in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood. No one was hurt in Seaside Park, but the Chelsea blast injured 31 people.

According to court documents filed by prosecutors, Rahami bought parts for bombs on auction website eBay. An investigation of social media accounts used by the suspect has revealed that Rahami posted videos praising jihad, prosecutors assert.

A day after the weekend explosions, a police robot accidentally detonated a third device found in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
