WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Comey stressed that the phenomenon of Americans and other foreigners traveling to join Daesh has “changed dramatically” over the past year, adding that the terrorist group “appears to have lost some of its power to attract troubled souls to travel there.”

“Where we used to see 8 or 10 people from the United States trying to go to the so-called caliphate, we're now down to one or none a month,” Comey testified to the US Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Since 2014, about 27,000 foreign fighters from more than 100 countries have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join Daesh, according to official US estimates.

Daesh is banned in the United States, Russian and other countries.
