US Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has a 2-percent lead over Republican party candidate Donald Trump ahead of their first presidential debate, a new poll revealed on Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Joint survey by The Washington Post and ABC News conducted on September 19-22 among 843 registered voters revealed that likely voters gave 46 percent for Clinton and 44 for Trump, while Libertarian and Green Party nominees received under 10 percent.

Clinton enjoyed a widening lead in the polls in the weeks following the two party national political conventions in July. However, through September, Trump has closed the gap and current polls either put him as tied or ahead by two points of Clinton.

The first presidential debate of the 2016 election season is set for Monday night at Hofstra University in New York state.

The US presidential election is scheduled to be held on November 8.
