"Americans have favored 'compromise' over 'sticking to principles' in each of these surveys, ranging from 53% this year and in 2013 to 47% when the question was first asked in late 2010 and early 2011," Gallup said in a statement.
The data also showed that the percentage of people who prefer leaders who stick to their guns this year is the lowest recorded since 2010 when the question was first asked, while 28 percent was the highest recorded in year 2011.
The data also showed that Democrats and Republicans look at this matter differently even though evidence shows that a shift in position is happening, for instance percentage of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who favor the compromise position has decreased to 56 percent from 67 percent when the question was last asked in 2014, while Republicans and Republicans-leaning independents have become more in favor of compromise than they were in 2014.
