Police in Washington DC have closed downtown streets following reports of a suspicious package and officers were evacuating buildings in the area, the Metropolitan Police Department said Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The department issued an alert saying officers were called to investigate a package at the Warner Theatre, a flew blocks from the White House and other federal government buildings.

On Monday, Washington police closed Pennsylvania Avenue near the museum-laden National Mall to investigate a suspicious package in the area, but streets were soon reopened.

The closures follow a series of bomb explosions in the US states of New Jersey and New York on Saturday, and the discovery on Sunday of additional improvised devices.
