Almost 90 percent of registered voters in the United States say that legal immigration is a net positive, a new Quinnipiac University poll revealed on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Despite some misgivings, "voters still say 89.9 percent that legal immigration is good for the country," a press release accompanying the poll stated.

Democratic and Republican supporters almost equally approve of having lawful residents from other countries, the poll found. Over 90 percent of respondents who identified as Democrats thought positively of legal immigration, while 88 percent of Republicans expressed that view.

However, 51 percent of Americans said they are either "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about "allowing immigrants who hold different values into the US," according to the poll.

Many Republicans have shown support for presidential nominee Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall on the US border with Mexico. Quinnipiac’s new poll found that nearly 80 percent of the party’s registered voters agree with the candidate that his proposal would benefit the United States.
