Donald Trump said that, if elected US president, he would convene a summit between the United States and its allies to discuss how countries would share defense costs.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – If elected US president, Donald Trump would convene a summit between the United States and its allies to discuss how countries would share defense costs, the Republican nominee told a rally in the US state of Iowa on Tuesday.

"I will convene a summit of our European and Asian allies to make sure everyone is sharing in the burden of security," Trump said.

He added that if asked "properly," US allies would be "very nice" about paying more for defense.

Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump has said the United States pays more than its fair share in helping defend other nations, and that it’s time for allies to bear more of the financial burden.
