According to Trump's defamation suit, the Daily Mail, along with a US-based blog Tarpley, spread a false narrative which could greatly harm the possible future First Lady's reputation, and influence the outcome of the election.
"These defendants made several statements about Mrs. Trump that are 100% false and tremendously damaging to her personal and professional reputation," Trump's lawyer said in a statement.
The Daily Mail recently published a story questioning Trump's past romantic relationships, modeling career and immigration story. The piece cited a Slovenian magazine which said that the modeling agency that represented Trump in the 90s "also operated as an escort agency for wealthy clients."
"Defendants'…many lies include, among others, that Mrs. Trump supposedly was an 'escort' in the 1990s before she met her husband," attorney Charles Harder told CNN. "Defendants' actions are so egregious, malicious and harmful to Mrs. Trump that her damages are estimated at $150 million dollars."
The Daily Mail retracted the story as well on Thursday afternoon, saying in a statement that it regretted any "misinterpretation," but Trump proceeded with the lawsuit, according to Harder.
Attorney Harder recently successfully sued Gawker Media for publishing a sex tape featuring wrestling star Hulk Hogan. Gawker Media declared bankruptcy and was forced to close its flagship site, Gawker.com, as it had to pay Hogan a $140 million award for defamation.
