The US Coast Guard and local rescue crews are helping 50 remaining people to leave the Caribbean Fantasy ferry which caught fire one mile off the coast of San Juan.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Fifty remaining passengers aboard the Caribbean Fantasy ferry are left to be rescued after the vessel caught fire off the coast of the US territory of Puerto Rico, the Coast Guard said in a Twitter message on Wednesday.

Originally 512 people were on board the ferry when it caught fire about one mile off the coast of San Juan.

"The fire reportedly began in the engine room of the ship and is spreading to other compartments on board," the Coast Guard's press release stated.

The Coast Guard noted that so far there are no injuries among the 512 passengers who are being evacuated.

The ferry was traveling from Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic when the fire started, the release added.

Several Coast Guard cutters and Puerto Rican vessels are assisting with the rescue and fire-fighting efforts.
