WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The nuclear plant located 25 miles away from the city of Baton Rouge, which has been hit hardest by the flooding, has not been affected, nor were any of the designated routes that would be used to evacuate the public in a nuclear emergency, the NRC stated.

"Torrential rains have been battering the Gulf Coast since Friday, but have not adversely affected any of the nuclear power plants in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Arkansas," the statement noted.

The commission added that all of the plants were built with the ability to withstand extreme flooding and shut down safely if necessary.

The NRC statement said that special inspectors are monitoring weather conditions in the area to ensure continued safe operations of the plants.
