No, it has nothing to do with Pacific Russia; Rossia pacifica is the name of the discovered marine animal, a beautiful purple squid with very expressive eyes.

The squid, which looks just like a cartoon character, was noticed off the coast of California, sitting on the ocean bottom at a depth of 900 meters. It was captured on video by the camera of the exploration vessel Nautilus.

Rossia pacifica usually spend their lives on the bottom of the northern Pacific Ocean at depths ranging from 300 meters to 1,300 meters. The animals bury themselves in the sand or mud, leaving only their eyes outside — that is how they look out for prey such as shrimp or small fish.

This species is often found in the by-catch of trawlers. In Japan, these squids are considered edible.
