Alleged Russian hacker Roman Seleznev, who is detained in the United States, was one of the biggest traders of stolen credit card numbers, Assistant US Attorney Seth Wilkinson said.

SEATTLE (Sputnik) — On Monday, the trial of Seleznev on charges of cybercrime began with the process of selecting a jury. Wilkinson, who represents the prosecution in the case, is blacklisted by Russia as well as banned from entering the country.

"For seven years the defendant was one of the largest traffickers in stolen credit card numbers in the world. He stole millions of credit card numbers and he sold them on his websites," Wilkinson said in an opening statement at Seleznev’s trial in Seattle on Monday.

According to Wilkinson, the Russian national left digital fingerprints on servers, computers and email accounts associated with several major sellers of stolen credit card numbers.

According to US prosecutors, Seleznev hacked into retail point-of-sale systems and installed malware in order to steal more than two million credit card numbers from businesses between October 2009 and October 2013.

In July 2014, US forces in the Maldives detained Seleznev, took him to Guam and then transferred him to Seattle.

Russian authorities have characterized the detention of Seleznev by the United States as kidnapping.
