US swimmer Michael Phelps won the 23nd Olympic gold in his career at the Rio Games after the US team won in the medley relay 4 by 100 meters, thus becoming the only athlete in the world to have 23 Summer Olympic gold medals on Sunday.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Sputnik) — The US team finished first with a time of 3 minutes and 27.95 seconds, which is the new Olympic record. Silver was won the United Kingdom, while the third place was taken by the Australian team.

On Tuesday, Phelps completed the men’s 200m individual medley in 1 minute 54.66, thus reaching his 22nd gold at Olympics.

Earlier, he won gold in men’s 200m butterfly, men’s 4x100m freestyle relay and men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

Phelps is also the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 27 medals.

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games are being held in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro from August 5 until August 21.
