New York's Longest Bridge Closed Until Damage Assessed From Crane Collapse

The longest bridge in New York State will remain closed to traffic pending a structural inspection after a crane collapsed on the bridge earlier on Tuesday, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said via Twitter.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, a malfunction led to a nearby crane collapsing on the Tappan Zee Bridge. The collapse forced all lanes along the I-87 highway to close.

We want to do structural inspection of the bridge. Until that is done, we’re not comfortable reopening the bridge to traffic. (1 of 2)

​There were no serious injuries as a result of the collapse, Cuomo added.

​The malfunction occurred in one of 28 cranes currently constructing an adjacent bridge expected be complete in 2018.
