"Our military enjoys very good relationship with the Turkish military. If in fact this coup has taken place and is successful, I think moving forward that relationship is imperative to maintain out NATO ally status with Turkey," McCaul said on Friday in an interview with Fox News.
The congressman argued that the Turkish military has seen policies of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as "a bit dangerous" to the security of the country.
"His [Turkish] military being more secular, President Erdogan being a little more on the Islamist side of the house," McCaul claimed. "With the attacks at the Istanbul airport recently, with the ISIS [Islamic State] attacks recently, with Russia in the region, I think what you are seeing now is a major military coup in response to some of these policies has taken place."
On Friday, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that a group of servicemen attempted a military coup d'etat in the country.
