US voter approval of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has fallen to the lowest level so far, plunging over 10 percentage points below Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's rating, the latest polls indicate.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In Sunday's poll by The Washington Post and ABC News, 51 percent of respondents said they would vote for Clinton in the upcoming US presidential election, while only 39 said they would vote for Trump.

The result is the best so far for Clinton, who received the support of 50 percent of respondents in March and December polls, before voter support plunged to 44 percent in May, when Trump overtook Clinton for the first time since the poll began.

In the course of his campaign, Trump has been widely criticized for his controversial statements, including with regard to immigrants, Latin Americans, Muslims, and women.

Clinton has come under significant criticism for using a private server and email address for official business during her tenure as secretary of state from 2009 until 2013.

The US presidential election is scheduled to take place on November 8, 2016.
