The US Army awarded a $1.7 billion contract to provide encrypted, tactical communications devices for the Department of Defense’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, the Harris Corporation announced in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik News) — The FMS program is a form of security assistance authorized by the US Arms Export Control Act that allows the US government to provide weapons and defense-related equipment to foreign states, according to the Defense Department’s FMS office.

"The agreement will add to an already broad range of Harris communications products and services for international customers under the FMS program," Harris Communications Systems President Chris Young said on Thursday.

Young noted that the contract highlights that the company’s tactical communication solutions "continue to meet the varied needs of our international customers."

The US Secretary of State approves which countries qualify for the Department of Defense program.
