US energy-based holding company PG&E Corporation will shut down the last nuclear plant in the state California by 2025, PG&E Chairman Tony Earley announced in a statement on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The company said power produced by the two reactors at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant will be replaced with energy efficient "greenhouse gas free portfolio."

"California's energy landscape is changing dramatically with energy efficiency, renewables and storage being central to the state's energy policy," Earley stated. "As we make this transition, Diablo Canyon's full output will no longer be required."

PG&E said several factors weighed into the decision to close the remaining nuclear reactors, including the goal to increase the share of renewable energy to 50 percent by 2030.
