About 92 percent of US residents say they support expanded background checks for people purchasing firearms, a 9 percent spike following the massacre of 49 patrons at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, a CNN/ORC poll revealed.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Apart from regulatory measures such as extensive background checks, "the support for tougher gun laws rose to 55 percent in the newest poll — the highest number since… January 2013," the news network reported on its website on Monday.

The 2013 poll followed shootings at an elementary school in the US state of Connecticut, which killed 26 people, mostly children.

Several proposals intended to reduce gun violence are to be considered by the US Senate in the evening on Monday.

More than half of those surveyed, or 52 percent, said that shootings like the one in Orlando will continue to take place, regardless of what action is taken by the US government and society, the poll noted.
