The University of California, Los Angeles was placed on lockdown in response to a murder-suicide on campus.

Police Chief Charlie Beck has confirmed that the incident was a murder-suicide. The homicide victim has been identified as William S. Klug, an engineering professor. Authorities believe the shooter may have been a student, who then killed himself.

A weapon was found at the scene of the crime, and multiple reports suggest that a suicide note was also recovered, though this has not been confirmed by authorities.

"We believe this situation is contained," Beck told reporters.

The shooting occurred in Boelter Hall, a campus engineering lab. The victims were both male.

Students have been asked to shelter in place and police are on the scene. The FBI and ATF are also responding to the shooting at the request of the LAPD, and local media reports the bomb squad has also been dispatched as an act of precaution.

The city of Los Angeles was placed on tactical alert in response to the incident and nearby Ronald Reagan Medical Center was also locked down.

Believing the incident to be a mass shooter, authorities were initially looking for an active shooter.

"The whole campus just started running and I started running too," Mehwish Khan, a 21-year-old psychobiology student, told the LA Times. "Everyone was very confused. We got in a building, and no one knew what was going on."
