The shooting occurred at Irving Plaza in Manhattan at about 10 pm local time on Wednesday (02:00 GMT on Thursday). The motive is unclear and no arrests have been made yet in connection with the incident, The New York Times said.
Rapper T.I. (Clifford Harris) was among the performers. According to witnesses cited by the newspaper, T.I. was about to go on stage, when the shooting occurred.
In 2009, the rapper pleaded guilty to three federal weapons charges.
Irving Plaza can host over 1,000 people, although it is unclear how many people were at the music venue at the time of the shooting.
