The Christian faith is on the defensive in the United States and the main religious movements in the country need to rally around the Republican presidential frontrunner, billionaire businessman Donald Trump told a rally in Janesville in the US state of Wisconsin.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The businessman has also attracted large numbers of Evangelical Christians within the Republican Party, who are also known as social conservatives.

"Christianity is under siege in America, I’ll tell you" Trump told the rally on Tuesday.

"We are going to unite the Evangelical movement under our banner… When the whole evangelical sector gets together no one can beat them," the Republican candidate said.

Trump has been publicly endorsed by Jerry Falwell, Jr., head of Liberty University in the US state of Virginia and one of the most influential Protestant Evangelical leaders in the United States.

Trump’s success with religious conservatives has been a key element in allowing him to win contests in southern and some Midwestern states from Senator Ted Cruz who has tried to present himself as the champion of those groups.
