Despite requirements by the State Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual that senior staffers must receive annual training on “identifying and marking” classified material, Hillary Clinton only one security briefing on January 22, 2009, only one day after the Senate confirmed her appointment as the nation’s top diplomat.
There remains a possibility that the Democratic presidential candidate received briefings and updates about government classification processes, but there is no evidence that any formal briefing occurred after January 22.
On Thursday, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said that all state Department staff receives proper training and awareness.
“We all have to undergo that, and it’s considered mandatory,” he asserted, without citing Clinton’s case in particular.
