The Caribbean island nation of Dominica has been added to the list of countries that US citizens are advised to avoid amid the spread of the Zika virus.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Caribbean island nation of Dominica has been added to the list of countries that US citizens are advised to avoid amid the spread of the Zika virus, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced in a statement on Tuesday.

"CDC is working with other public health officials to monitor for ongoing Zika virus‎ transmission. Today, CDC posted a Zika virus travel notice for Dominica," the statement read.

So far, the CDC has warned US citizens from travelling to more than 30 countries as the Zika virus has been linked to brain defects in newborn babies.

The current Zika virus outbreak started in Brazil in the spring of 2015 and has since spread across Latin America, the Caribbean and parts of the United States. Cases have been also reported in several European countries and Asia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared it a public health emergency.

At present, there is no available vaccine for the Zika virus, but the United States and Cuba announced on Monday they would pool their resources to fight various diseases, including the Zika virus.
